It looks like 2017 is the year of Star Trek and spoofs about Star Trek. The first trailer for Black Mirror season four includes an unexpected reference to Trek in what looks to be the series first episode set in space.
On Friday, Netflix released the teaser-trailer for the sci-fi anthology series, which revealed all five of the episode titles for Black Mirror’s upcoming fourth season. Intercut with the episode titles are scenes from each story, giving the subtlest of hints of that they are all about. The titles are: “Crocodile,” “Arkangel,” “Hang the DJ,” “USS Callister,” “Metalhead,” and “Black Museum.”
While it’s tough to say exactly what each episode is about, the brief montage dips into robots gone amok, simulated realities, people getting really scared, scary futures, and something that looks like a creepy version of Star Trek. Also, someone looks like they’re regenerating, Doctor Who style. That episode, called “USS Callister,” is directed by Toby Hayes, famous for Doctor Who and Sherlock. The first episode, “Crocodile,” is directed by Jodie Foster.
With its edgy technological allegories, Black Mirror has emerged as the sci-fi anthology show to beat, and perhaps the best show of its type since The Twilight Zone and or The Outer Limits. And though it will be hard to top season 3’s diverse storylines, season 4 is already looking arrestingly compelling.
Black Mirror season 4 will be available “soon” according to Netflix. An exact release date has not be set, though many suspect it will happen in October, sometime before Stranger Things.
