After defeating Dormammu, Doctor Strange hung out with Thor in New York City. Because Thor was interested in finding and freeing his father, the Sorcerer Supreme offered to help the God of Thunder, mostly because it would mean all-powerful beings like Thor and Loki would leave Earth. And now, that mid-credits scene from Doctor Strange appears to be exactly where Thor: Ragnarok will pick up in the MCU chronology.
On Wednesday, a new Japanese trailer for Thor: Ragnarok opened with Strange telling Thor ominously “I sense a great change in your future.” That change quickly becomes apparent, Thor’s hammer is smashed by Hela, the Goddess of Death.
Eagle-eyed fans will notice that this quick hammer-smashing scene seems to take place on the streets of New York City. This means that Thor chills with Doctor Strange in NYC right before he gets banished to space and ends up on the Planet Hulk. So, if the events in Thor: Ragnarok unfold linearly, the film will open in New York, just shortly after Doctor Strange ended. And if the movie begins with Thor already on the Planet Hulk — with short hair — then it will feature some kind of flashback to late 2016, which depicts how he got there in the first place.
Either way, Thor’s bromance with Doctor Strange will be the beginning of the end of his epically long and famously lush golden hair.
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3.
