We Might Not Find Out How Maz Got Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber

As wise and worldly as Maz Kanata proved herself to be in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, she’ll still be shrouded in mystery in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It seems she won’t answer any of the real questions Star Wars fans have — at least about certain Jedi weapons and how they came to be in her possession.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in an interview published on August 11, Last Jedi director Rian Johnson revealed that, while Maz has some secrets to share, “she has a smaller part in this than she has in The Force Awakens, but it’s a really fun part.” Despite having inspired Rey to accept her destiny and listen to the call of the Force, Maz won’t have too much of a part to play in The Last Jedi.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Maz has “insights into the past.” But, really, what else is new? So far, Maz has been a guiding light and very obviously knows more than she lets on. But her limited screen time in Last Jedi probably means that a lot of the questions Star Wars fans have been scrambling over since Force Awakens won’t actually be answered.

The most important of those questions so far has been: Where in the hell did Maz find that lightsaber?

Technically, the blue lightsaber is now Rey’s, as confirmed by the powers that be at Lucasfilm, but it seems unlikely fans will learn how Maz managed to get a hold of the lightsaber in The Force Awakens.

By, blue lightsaber! See you in 30 years after you somehow end up in Maz's basement.

The last time anyone saw the blue lightsaber, it was falling over the edge of Cloud City after Darth Vader chopped Luke’s hand off in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

So, while fans will get to see Rey wielding her newly acquired lightsaber thanks to Maz, it’s likely that they won’t get any answers about its history.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15.
