But which one is the real Leatherface?

More than 40 years after the world was first introduced to Leatherface, fans of the chainsaw-wielding maniac will learn his origin story. Leatherface, set to premiere this October, is the prequel to 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and just got a new trailer on Tuesday, which details what led to Leatherface’s first kill.

The trailer opens with a mother giving one of her children a chainsaw for his birthday and what looks like the opportunity to kill a man she’s captured for the occasion. Things get a little dicey there, with the narrative of the trailer jumping quickly from one plot point to another. But the official synopsis for the film gives a little insight:

A teenage Leatherface escapes from a mental hospital with three other inmates, kidnapping a young nurse and taking her on a road trip from hell while being pursued by an equally deranged lawman out for revenge.

Supposedly, the plot might also involve a bit of a mystery as the audience attempts to figure out which of the escaped teenagers is actually Leatherface. They’re all dangerous, but which one has a penchant for chainsaws?

Leatherface premieres via DirecTV on September 21 and in limited release in theaters on October 20.
