In a tweet posted Monday morning, actor Ryan Reynolds posted the first official look at his Deadpool 2 co-star Josh Brolin as the futuristic cyborg mutant Cable.
In a photo where it looks like Brolin is “shushing” the Merc with a Mouth, Reynolds accompanied the photo with the caption: “We all have that one, grumpy, heavily armed Uncle from the future. #PremiumCABLE #JoshBrolin.”
Brolin has all the hallmarks required of Cable: the scars, the gold left eye, the white hair — proof that Rob Liefeld was involved — an ammo pouch. Another photo showed Cable’s full figure, which reveals a better look at his cybernetic left arm, a teddy bear, and, yes, more ammo pouches. There’s no doubt about it: This is Cable.
Introduced in The New Mutants #87 in 1990, Cable is the son of the X-Man Cyclops, who comes from the future to train the titular New Mutants into tip-top shape. Eventually, the success of The New Mutants helped launch X-Force, which starred Cable as he morphed the kid mutants into an aggressive black ops team. It was also in The New Mutants #98 where Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza introduced Deadpool in his first comic book appearance.
Later, Reynolds followed up with a second photo.
Both Cable and Deadpool have enjoyed a fun, reluctant bromance in the comics. Unlike maybe Batman and Robin or Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Cable rarely puts up with Deadpool’s crap, while Deadpool is resilient to keep Cable smiling.
Deadpool 2, which is shooting now, will be released in theaters on June 1, 2018.
