Here's Where You Can Watch 'Dunkirk' in IMAX 70mm
To get the full experience, Christopher Nolan wants you to go big.
There are big movies, and then there are BIG movies. Christopher Nolan’s newest film, the period war thriller Dunkirk — based on the Dunkirk evacuation (also known as the “miracle of Dunkirk”) during World War II — is unique in that it was shot almost entirely on 65mm film with IMAX cameras. This means Nolan’s next film may be his biggest movie yet, in a literal sense, so going to your typical theater just won’t cut it if you want to experience Nolan’s true vision.
A select number of theaters around the world are screening Dunkirk the way Nolan intended, in full 70mm IMAX, but there are also screenings in non-IMAX 70mm and digital IMAX. There’s a lot of science behind the format, but the peanut-sized explanation is that there is more information on the screen in the full format as opposed to a traditional screen. You can tell the difference at first glance because IMAX 70mm is more vertical than the average widescreen format. So those who are thinking of waiting to watch the movie at home on Netflix are going to seriously miss out.
If you’re a little confused, don’t worry — Warner Bros. has even released a handy guide to help you tell the difference.
So, Where Can I Watch Dunkirk?
The film’s official website has an exceptionally user-friendly search engine to look for theaters near you that are screening Dunkirk in 70mm IMAX. Just enter your location, such as your state or ZIP code (for U.S. residents), and the website will bring up the closest theater to you where you can buy tickets.
Alternatively, you can look at the list below, curated by IMAX, which has all the theaters that are screening Dunkirk in whatever IMAX format you wish. You’re welcome!
