Watch the Teaser for ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ That Debuted at D23
The classic sci-fi novel is getting a psychedelic treatment from Ava DuVernay.
On Friday, director Ava DuVernay had announced on Twitter that Disney fans would get a look at the upcoming film adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, and during Saturday’s Live-Action Films panel at D23, she delivered.
Along with a star-studded cast, including Chris Pine, Mindy Kaling and Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon, DuVernay debuted the film’s first trailer — and it looks epic.
The film is based on Madeleine L’Engle’s time and space-bending novel that follows high schooler Meg Murray (played by newcomer Storm Reid) as she races through dimensions to rescue her father (Chris Pine) from evil forces on another planet.
In the early ‘60s, the book was thought to be too complex, adult, and unmarketable because of its young female lead. The novel proved everyone wrong, however; it went on to be one of the most well-received and popular children’s books of all time.
DuVernay’s take on the book looks equally high-minded for children’s fare, with a sophisticated style and a serious tone. Aesthetically, it has something of a Hunger Games theatricality to it, and Mindy Kaling mentioned that the film’s script was sure to give the story a contemporary update. For example, her character Mrs. Who — who speaks entirely in riddles — now quotes from the contemporary scholar, Jay-Z.
There’s still a long way to go until we can see the film, as A Wrinkle in Time doesn’t actually hit theaters until March 9, 2018. For now, you can whet your appetite with the brand new the trailer below:
