Netflix’s Slick-Looking Godzilla Anime Gets First Trailer

Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, is extending his reign to Netflix. The first trailer for the first anime film starring the No. 1 Kaiju is finally here, and although there’s just one smokey shot of a distant Godzilla, he certainly looks like a force to be reckoned with.

The movie, Godzilla: Monster Planet, which is slotted to open in Japan in November and hit Netflix after that, is a bit different than most Godzilla movies — and not just because it’s animated. According to the synopsis, the film takes place 20,000 years in the future. The rise of Godzilla and other Kaiju made Earth uninhabitable, forcing the remains of the human race to flee to space. However, that plan didn’t work out, so, thousands of years later, the humans come back to try to reestablish life on his hostile monster planet.

The trailer, which was posted to Toho animation’s YouTube page on Thursday morning, is in un-subtitled Japanese. The visuals though, which are of the sleek, computer-shiny anime variety, convey the story pretty well. There are spaceships, a young hero, a grizzled veteran, and monsters. We get a glimpse of a (relatively) small Kaiju, though, it’s unclear if it’s a familiar face or not. Then, the trailer ends with two figures gazing out at Godzilla. He’s massive.

Godzilla: Monster Planet opens in Japan on November 17 and will hit Netflix after the premiere.
