Rebellions are built on hope, and now Netflix has answered Star Wars fans’ hopes that they’ll be able to watch the first standalone movie, Rogue One, from the comfort of their homes. The 2016 movie, which documents the Rebel Alliance’s attempt to steal the plans for the first Death Star, is hitting the streaming service on July 18.
Netflix announced that Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, K-2SO, and the gang would be available to stream on Wednesday when they shared the highly anticipated monthly coming and going from Netflix list. It’s a major boon for Star Wars fans, especially because the rest of the series is surprisingly hard to stream.
The original Star Wars trilogy has yet to land on Netflix. In the spring of 2015, eight months before The Force Awakens opened, the trilogy made a global digital debut for the streaming era, but when TFA went up for home viewing, it was only streamable on Netflix-Canada. In the United States, you could only stream TFA via the Starz App.
July 18 is a Tuesday and in the United States, Netflix usually adds new content at midnight Pacific or 3 a.m. Eastern. So stay up late on Monday if you want to be among the first to see Rogue One on Netflix.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is one of a handful of exciting titles coming to Netflix in July. It’s joined by an original Castlevania anime series, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Titanic, and, uh, Free Willy.
