Although George R. R. Martin has never actually stated that A Song of Ice and Fire means that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen will hook up, all Game of Thrones fans know they will. There’s jut no way the Dragon Queen and the King in the icy North won’t bang, right? A recent statement from Emilia Clarke threw some cold water on that idea, hinting that it’s not going to happen soon, at least.
“I think that [Daenerys] has ultimately put aside her own need for a man,” Clarke told S/ Magazine. “She is so engaged and wrapped up in leading and being the queen and ruling and fulfilling her birth right that the idea of someone coming in and sharing that title is probably something she’s not comfortable with.”
Of course, the other interpretation of that statement is that Jon and Daenerys will indeed bang in Season 7, but it won’t be a smooth-sailing relationship filled with equality. Even putting aside the fact that they don’t realize they’re aunt and nephew, they have drastically different leadership methods.
Daenerys swoops in with her dragons as a conqueror who imposes her own law on any given land, its citizens be damned. Just because Tyrion is her Hand of the Queen, it doesn’t mean she’ll change her tune. Jon, on the other hand, has risen to the mantle of leadership not out of entitlement but duty.
Still, there’s little chance the writers will resist making a horizontal dance out of the story’s titular song of ice and fire. After all, as the Faceless Men say, all pretty characters must hook up. That’s the expression, right?
Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres July 16 on HBO.
