New 'Planet of the Apes' Chimp Has Seen Some Bad Things

Caesar’s fight for the survival of his fellow apes will be an ugly one against Woody Harrelson’s Colonel in the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes. The introduction of a new character, who only refers to himself as “Bad Ape,” proves that the struggle will only get more complicated.

A new clip for War for the Planet of the Apes, “Meeting Bad Ape,” premiered on Wednesday to introduce audiences to the titular Bad Ape, a former zoo chimp voiced by Steve Zahn. A neurotic loner, Bad Ape explains to Caeser and his followers that he originally lived in a zoo, and, after the humans killed the rest of his family, he’s been living alone and taught himself how to speak by studying the humans. Most important to the plot, Bad Ape reveals that he knows where the “human zoo” is. Meaning, he knows where the Colonel and his forces are.

Bad Ape doesn’t want to take Caesar and his new friends there, but it seems like Caesar won’t give him much of a choice.

War for the Planet of the Apes takes place two years after the events of 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and is the third installment of the Planet of the Apes reboot series, which began with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. While the events of War for the Planet of the Apes seem to hint at an end to the series, a fourth film is already being planned by 20th Century Fox, and was announced back in October 2016.

War for the Planet of the Apes premieres in theaters on July 14.
