Star Wars fans made a big fuss about how the scar that Rey inflicted upon Kylo Ren during their climatic lightsaber duel changed between The Force Awakens and the upcoming Last Jedi, but what about his internal scars?
According to Vanity Fair’s new, lengthy cover story about Episode VIII, Kylo is in a pretty bad place emotionally after killing his father Han Solo at the end of the previous movie.
“I feel like almost everyone is in that rehabilitation state,” Adam Driver told Vanity Fair’s David Kamp, referring to both his character’s injuries and the grievous wounds he inflicted on Finn. “You know, I don’t think that patricide is all that it’s cracked up to be. Maybe that’s where Kylo Ren is starting from. His external scar is probably as much an internal one.”
Even before he skewered his daddy in The Force Awakens, Kylo wasn’t exactly the most stable villain. He was full of rage and felt very conflicted about his turn to the Dark side. Impaling Han seemed, at the time, like he had finally, irrevocably devoted himself to the Dark side, but maybe not. At the very least, he’s dealing with guilt about what he’s done. Chances are we don’t see Han come back as a Force ghost, but Kylo’s still going to be haunted.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres on December 15.
