Ewan McGregor Wants to Use a Mind Trick to Avoid Obi-Wan Question
Obi-Wan Kenobi is well-versed in diverting attention with a Jedi mind trick, but the Force isn’t going to save him this time. People won’t stop asking Obi-Wan actor Ewan McGregor about the possibility of an Obi-Wan solo Star Wars film, and as much as McGregor might want one, that doesn’t mean Disney’s going to give him one.
“I’ve been asked this question so many times, and I answer the questions when I’m asked them because I’ve been brought up like that, polite,” McGregor said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday night upon a prompt from Kimmel regarding an Obi-Wan solo film. “And it’s gotten to the point where it looks like I’m touting for work at Disney’s front door. Like, ‘Give me the Obi-Wan spinoff,’ you know.”
Many Star Wars fans have pleaded for an Obi-Wan anthology film, following on the heels of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the upcoming young Han Solo standalone. The theoretical film would either follow Obi-Wan’s time on Tatooine as he looked after Luke Skywalker or introduce Obi-Wan’s journey as a young Padawan at his master Qui-Gon Jinn’s side.
But, if there is any chance of an Obi-Wan film, McGregor’s not the person to ask. He knows nothing more than anyone else in the Star Wars fandom.
Aside from an Obi-Wan anthology, it’s assumed that the third standalone Star Wars film would be either a Leia Organa anthology — which feels unlikely due to the death of Carrie Fisher, the original Leia — or a bounty hunter story following Boba or Jango Fett.
