See What It's Like to Be a Chestburster in 'Alien' VR Experience

by James Grebey

On Alien Day, April 26, the studio behind the upcoming Prometheus follow-up, Alien: Covenant, released a virtual reality experience that would let people see what it’s like to be a horrifying chestburster Xenomorph. Initially, In Utero was only available for anybody lucky enough to own a swanky VR headset, but now you can experience the whole gory ordeal thanks to a 360-degree YouTube video that came out on Wednesday.

In the video, you are technically a “backburster,” since this particular Xenomorph breaks through a poor sap’s spine in one of the scariest scenes in all of Alien: Covenant. It’s a little dark, at first, but it’s kind of peaceful as you float in this, uh, deadly makeshift womb. As your little Xenomorph cans grow additional claws, you can hear screaming and a heartbeat that just keeps getting faster and faster until it’s time to pop out.

It’s probably wise to go through the whole experience a couple times, since the “birthing” process looks very different depending on if you’re facing forwards or backwards. Whichever way you’re looking, though, make sure you stick around until the very end, ‘cause this newborn Xenomorph is hungry.

In Utero is available to experience in multiple languages on Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, and Google Daydream, as well as on YouTube and Facebook. Alien: Covenant will hit theaters on May 19.
