The ape leader Caesar may be at war with humans in War of the Planet of the Apes, but he has a lot with common with one human in particular: Bruce Wayne. Just don’t call anyone “Apeman” just yet.
On April 27, War of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves told the Los Angeles Daily News that he sees a connection between Caesar and the caped crusader known as Batman. Because Bruce Wayne has a “tortured soul,” Reeves sees him as “a really powerful character, in the same way that Caesar is such a powerful character.” Reeves’s next project after War of the Planet of the Apes is a standalone movie called The Batman which is all about a character who, for a variety of reasons, dresses up like bat to fight crime.
Though the film originally was rumored to have Ben Affleck both starring and directing, as of February, Reeves was confirmed as the director.
In January, Affleck said that “I cannot do both jobs,” meaning he was opting to play Batman instead of directing the character. The Batman doesn’t have a release date yet, but the Reeves direct War for the Planet of the Apes is in wide release on July 14, 2017.
