Star-Lord’s mom had great taste in music. Awesome Mix Vol. 1, the mixtape of songs from the ‘60s and ‘70s that Peter Quill listened to on repeat during the first Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the best parts of the movie, and now the tracklist for the second cassette is out just in time for Vol. 2. The new soundtrack features classic hits by groups like Fleetwood Mac, Same Cooke, Cheap Trick, and, interestingly, a brand-new song by David Hasselhoff.
It’s a fun, fairly eclectic collection of songs. Director James Gunn told Rolling Stone that the woman behind the mixtape, Peter’s late mom, Meredith, is “a music lover, but she’s completely not elitist.”
“If it’s something that’s thought of as goofy and pop, she likes it. If it’s cool or funk, she likes it,” Gunn continued. “She just likes hooks and melodies. She’s a very quirky, young girl who fell in love with, you know, as it ends up, an alien. And falling in love with an alien is right up there in Meredith Quill’s alley. She’s an oddball, like her son.”
Some of these songs, like Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” and Sweet’s “Fox on the Run,” have already appeared in trailers or TV spots, but a lot of the Vol. 2 tracklist is still a fun little surprise. Nothing is more surprising, though, than the original comedic song by The Sneepers with lyrics by David Hasselhoff, described by Gunn as one of Peter’s “childhood heroes.” Gun wrote. That song, “Guardians Inferno,” was written by Gunn and is currently the only track you can’t listen to before the soundtrack’s release date of April 21.
In the meantime, listen to a playlist compiling the rest of the Awesome Mix Vol. 2 songs, as well as the hits from Vol. 1, below. Look for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theaters on May 5.
