The bulk of the first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi took place where The Force Awakens left off, with Luke Skywalker and Rey on the craggy island planet Ahch-To. However, one tantalizing shot showed a squad of ships skimming along the surface of a brand new planet. Luckily, we won’t have to wait until Christmas to find out what the new world’s deal is since director Rian Johnson has announced its name: Crait.
“It’s way out there. It’s uncharted,” Johnson explained to Entertainment Weekly in an interview following the trailer’s Friday premiere. “It’s a mineral planet and so there are mines on it,” he continued, later describing “an old Rebel base there that’s now abandoned.”
Crait’s exact place in the movie, like most of the plot, is still unknown at this point, but Johnson says “it ends up playing a key role in the movie.” The new skimmers, which he identifies as Resistance fighters, need to deal with “a very pressing and immediate” threat, which looks like it could be AT-ST Walkers off on the horizon, though they’re too small to tell for sure.
We’ll know more about Crait when The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017. Maybe we’ll learn if this planet is also named after a Starbucks barista error.
