In an unexpected guest appearance, Harrison Ford crashed the Star Wars Celebration stage on Thursday and proceeded to join in on the subtle ribbing of George Lucas already underway.
After Mark Hamill laid into George Lucas for writing dialogue that was impossible to actually perform, Harrison Ford doubled-down, saying that he wished George Lucas “would move your mouth” while writing the script for the original film. To Lucas’s credit, he took everything in stride, though the festivities did briefly start to feel more like a George Lucas roast than a celebration of 40 years of the franchise. Lucas reminisced about American Graffiti and Ford debating him who was in the room when Ford was installing a door as a favor for Francis Ford Coppola. When asked what impact Star Wars had on his life, Ford said jokingly, “None whatsoever.”
But it wasn’t all Lucas-bashing and Star Wars sarcasm. Harrison Ford charmingly said he felt that the story of Star Wars was “intelligent” and that his involvement with the franchise has been “a good ride.”
Neither Ford nor anyone on the panel mentioned anything about The Last Jedi nor the upcoming Han Solo movie. For Han Solo and his creator, this was a hyperspace trip exclusively into the past.
