The annihilation of Earth seems imminent in the latest Transformers: The Last Knight trailer. Humanity is engaged in a prophesied war with the Transformers and Optimus Prime is on a mission to seek redemption after being held responsible for the destruction of Cybertron in Michael Bay’s latest project.
“Without leaders, chaos reigns,” Anthony Hopkins’s Sir Edmund Burton says in the trailer, giving audiences the longest listen of his intoned speech about the hidden history of Transformers yet. “Two worlds colliding. You’re all that stand in its way. And now, the greatest mission of them all: to turn the tide of human history.”
Optimus Prime is in chains at the very beginning of the trailer, swearing to his “maker” that he’ll make up for the crimes he’s committed. Apparently, that comes with the cost of waging war on Earth.
The rest of the trailer reveals a staggeringly dark story, with images of Transformers killing one another and humans running for their lives. It seems all the humans can do is stare soulfully out windows and hope for the best. Supposedly, people will rise and lead humanity to a victory. Supposedly, the Earth can be saved. But the images depicted in The Last Knight so far provide little hope for a happy ending.
Transformers: The Last Knight premieres in theaters June 23, 2017.
