If there’s one thing Marvel’s Captain America and Star-Lord have in common, it’s feeling out of touch. Steve Rogers was the butt of several jokes in The Avengers when his fellow heroes made references to any movies or music made after 1950, and Peter Quill seduces Gamora by explaining the plot of Footloose and making her listen to Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.”
In a new comedic clip promoting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) explains his Walkman to an unseen audience of millennials. “It’s called that because you can walk, man,” he says, smiling as he strides offscreen. The original Walkman was released in the mid-1970s. In 2009, Sony ceased producing new cassette-based Walkman devices in the United States, though limited production continued in nations like China and Japan.
Not being one for realism, Peter Quill still uses his Walkman all over the galaxy. In the Guardians sequel, he’ll have his mother’s second cassette for him, which means his Walkman will be playing through an all new set of tunes.
