Pierce Brosnan Shuts Downs Rumors That He’ll Play Cable

by James Grebey

It seems that we’ve passed the tipping point for Deadpool 2 casting rumors. For a while, it seemed like the rumored list of names for actors that could play the grizzled mutant from the future, Cable, was just going to keep growing and growing. But then the director said that Brad Pitt was out of the running, and now Pierce Brosnan has soundly dismissed the rumors that he’s playing Cable.

The former James Bond became a popular candidate (in the eyes of fans on the internet but not, apparently, the film’s producers) after Ryan Reynolds shared a picture of Hugh Jackman, Brosnan, and himself chilling on a couch. Although this was far, far from any sort of official confirmation that Brosnan was even being considered to wear Cable’s massive shoulder pads, fans ate that shit up.

On Tuesday night, though, Brosnan swung by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to dash their misguided hopes and dreams.

“Not true,” Brosnan said when Kimmel mentioned the rumor. “Nothing’s come my way yet. It was completely made up.”

“We were sitting, waiting for a plane, the three of us, and the guy said, ‘Quick, let’s get a photograph,’” Bronson recalled. “I jump in the middle and Mr. Reynolds said, ‘Let’s do Three Wise Monkeys.’ [We] put it out there and it went viral.”

Brosnan assured Kimmel that he wasn’t trying to trick people. “I ain’t lying. I don’t lie. They know where to find me, it’s just fabricated.”

Michael Shannon and Stranger Things’s David Harbour are still possibilities — for now, at least.

Deadpool 2 doesn’t have a release date yet.
