Season 6 of Game of Thrones ended with Cersei Lannister on the Iron Throne, Daenerys Targaryen sailing to Westeros to take it, and Jon Snow as the King in the North. A new trailer for Season 7 shines a spotlight on the three potential supreme rulers.
In the new footage, Jon, Daenerys, and Cersei are shown making solo walks to the throne room. Jon wears his Northern furs, Daenerys dons a regal cloak, and Cersei wears her crown. The end of Season 6 not only crowned Jon as the King in the North, it also revealed him as the true contender to the Iron Throne. Because his true parents are Lyanna Stark and Daenerys’s deceased older brother, Rhaegar Targaryen, Jon is the true and rightful king. It remains to be seen who else knows this information, aside from Bran Stark.
Cersei will hardly give it up without a fight, and even if Daenerys bonds with her newly revealed nephew, it remains an open question as to how she’ll feel about his leadership. After all, Daenerys has the spirit of a conqueror, while Jon has the Stark spirit of decency and fairness.
At the end of the trailer, Cersei’s breath materializes in the air — signifying that winter is here — and the shot pans out to reveal the icy eye of a White Walker. No other characters appear.
Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres on July 16th.
