'Valerian' Trailer Looks Like 'Romeo + Juliet' Meets 'Star Wars'

by Ryan Britt

In the brand-new trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, outer space Agents Laureline and Valerian are tasked with defending not just humankind, but thousands of aliens too. Director Luc Besson’s new sci-fi epic looks spectacular, but unlike the first trailer, this version looks more romantic. Dane DeHaan’s Valerian seems to be taking some fashion cues from Leonardo DiCaprio in Baz Luhrmann’s ‘90s cult classic, Romeo + Juliet.

If the first Valerian trailer was all about showing off the interstellar spectacle of the galaxy-spanning movie, this trailer explains a little bit more of the plot. Essentially, an entire interconnected coalition of aliens and humans needs Valerian and Laureline to save the day. While rocking Leo’s flower-print shirt and gun combo from Romeo + Juliet, DeHaan is great at playing a space badass, though Cara Delevingne is totally aiming to out-charm him. This trailer gives audiences a much wider scope of the alien worlds, ships, planets, Laureline running in a wedding dress carrying a sword, and Rihanna. Even the most cynical sci-fi fan will be thrilled. Valerian looks big, and might just be a worthy successor to Luc Besson’s other sci-fi classic, The Fifth Element. Watch the new trailer here:

Valerian will hit theaters sometime in July 2017, 2017.
