A new challenger has stepped forward to play Cable in Deadpool 2, and this time it’s Man of Steel actor Michael Shannon.
Sources for THR are reporting that the two-time Oscar-nominated performer is on the shortlist to play Cable, the mutant cyborg son of Cyclops in Deadpool 2, which will be directed by David Leitch (John Wick). Shannon joins a shortlist that, as far as anyone publicly knows, also includes Stranger Things actor David Harbour.
THR is also reporting a more definitive picture of Cable in the Deadpool sequel. Cable, created by Rob Liefeld and Louise Simonson, is said to be “the opposite of Deadpool” and is “a man who is a leader and used to being obeyed, who is very controlled but with an aura of simmering violence.” That’s just a little different from Cable in the comics, who is more or less a muscular badass who is still fun as the straight-faced opposite to Deadpool’s lunacy. It’s unknown if the film will retain Cable’s lineage as the son of Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, who was played by James Marsden in Fox’s X-Men films.
Michael Shannon is no stranger to superhero universes. The Boardwalk Empire actor portrayed Zod in 2013’s Man of Steel, which he reprised as a lifeless corpse in last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
