Director James Gunn Says There Will Be a 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3'

by James Grebey

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is going to start playing on May 5, but people are already wondering if we’ll see Star-Lord, Groot, and the rest of the gang again (beyond a possible Infinity War appearance). It seems like we will, because, in a new interview, director James Gunn confirmed that there is going to be a third movie.

“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure,” Gunn told Complex while promoting his new movie, The Belko Experiment. “We’re trying to figure it out.”

Although the movie isn’t officially on Marvel’s schedule yet, it would make sense that they’d want to bring one of their more beloved franchises out for a third spin, assuming Vol. 2 does well. However, the big question seems not to be if there will be a third Guardians, but if Gunn, the man most responsible for the films’ success, will helm it.

“I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is,” he told Complex. “I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”

It wouldn’t be the first time a director has walked away from Marvel. Joss Whedon, the geek icon who directed both Avengers movies, left after Age of Ultron, saying he’d been “beaten down.” We’ll have to wait and see how Gunn is faring after two spins through Marvel’s blockbuster machine.

It is sad, Rocket.

As for that possible Infinity War appearance? Gunn wouldn’t say much about the Guardians’ involvement. “I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie,” he explained, “but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.
