The newest clip from Dean Israelite’s Power Rangers makes the movie look more like a family-friendly romp than a dark film aimed at the now grown-up fans of the original TV series. Black Ranger Zack (Ludi Lin) takes his Zord out for a spin while Alpha 5 isn’t looking, and it rockets across a mountain range with him trapped inside. Alpha 5 calmly lectures the other Rangers while the clip cuts back and forth between their lesson and Zack’s frantic attempts to get the Zord under control.
When Zack crashes his Mastodon Zord into a cavern, right where Alpha 5 and the other Rangers are talking, Alpha 5 says his iconic catchphrase from the show: “Aye yi yi … !” If the entire movie is as fun as this 50-second clip, Power Rangers fans are in for a thrilling ride this month.
It seems like piloting Dinozords isn’t second nature to the Rangers anymore. In the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Rangers managed to control their giant war machines on the fly after just a few minutes in the cockpit. “This is amazing, I seem to just know how to drive this thing!” the original Trini (Thuy Trang) remarked in the first episode. “Affirmative,” Billy (David Yost) replied, “It’s almost like second nature to me.” Compare those sentiments to Zack’s frantic, “Brakes!! Where are the brakes?!” in this movie.
