Finn's Undercover Mission Seemingly Confirmed in 'Episode 8'

by Ryan Britt

The rumor of Finn going on a spy mission for the Resistance to infiltrate a First Order Super Star Destroyer has been going around since 2016, but now the first footage from Star Wars: The Last Jedi seems to confirm this plot point. In the new footage, Finn is reportedly wearing a First Order uniform.

According to a Slashfilm report published on Thursday, the Last Jedi footage screened for the Disney shareholder meeting on Wednesday includes “Finn dressed as a First Order officer.” According to the report, it looks like he’s on “the bridge of a First Order ship,” with Kelly Marie Tran, who is also “dressed in a First Order uniform.” Having worked as a Stormtrooper for the First Order, Finn certainly knows his way around their ships and bases, but how is he getting away with walking around one of their ships without a disguise. Finn’s betrayal of the First Order was well-known enough in The Force Awakens to cause two people to yell “traitor” at him just by seeing his face.

LEFT: Finn without his Stormtrooper helmet. CENTER: Han throws on a helmet and covers his mouth in 'Return of the Jedi.' RIGHT: Cassian dons a hat and fools everyone in 'Rogue One.'

So, how does this spy mission work? If Finn has pretended to double cross the Resistance, perhaps the First Order would willingly accept him into their ranks again. Either that or Finn and Kelly Marie Tran’s character are simply hanging out in a moment where no one else is around them who could recognize Finn. To be fair, if the First Order has the same security procedures as the Empire did during Rogue One, this might be a simple case of Finn putting on a little hat to confuse everyone. Putting on a hat worked for Cassian Andor on Scarif, and it worked for Han Solo on Endor in Return of the Jedi, too.

Finn, his mission, Rey’s training, and probably Supreme Leader Snoke will all be revealed on December 15 when The Last Jedi hit theaters.
