Surprise, surprise: Batman and Superman are fighting again. This time it’s not on the big screen, but in a video game, with Injustice 2.
“We both knew it would come to this,” Superman says to his foe.
“It was only a matter of time,” agrees Batman.
“I’ll try to make it … painless,” Superman says, before the two engage in a fistfight.
Yes, the dialogue in NetherRealm Studio’s latest fighting game should be universally recognizable if not the most creative or natural-sounding. It’s certainly soapy enough, and wouldn’t be lost among the dialogue of Days of Our Lives.
The sequel begins some time after the first game ended in an alternate reality, with the evil Superman who lives in the Injustice universe having escaped prison. He tries to impose his authoritarian brand of justice on the DC Universe once more.
That is, if Batman can’t stop him.
There are hints that Superman’s “Regime” isn’t the only group eyeing world domination, but all of this narrative looks to take a backseat to Batman and Superman’s fistfights.
Injustice 2 is the newest fighting from NetherRealm, which is also behind the Mortal Kombat series. The video game studio transplants the fighting game’s trademark brutality from its Mortal Kombat series, but this time using DC’s famous characters to take part in the carnage.
The sequel will include more new characters than the first game, with plenty of new characters like Supergirl — who can be seen in this story trailer — all joining the fight in this parallel DC Universe. In addition, DC has been running a series of critically-acclaimed Injustice comic books which fills in the story between the two games.
Injustice 2 launches on PS4 and Xbox One May 16, 2017.
