It still doesn’t have a title, but the standalone Han Solo-centric Star Wars movie has a new behind-the-scenes photo and a plot synopsis, the latter of which confirms several casting rumors.
On Tuesday, Star Wars.com released a behind-the-scenes photo with Alden Ehrenreich rocking a jacket he stole from Indiana Jones while flanked by his co-stars Emelia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge plus Co-Directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord. The new synopsis also confirms both Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Thandie Newton will join the cast, though Newton isn’t pictured.
Previously, both actresses had only been rumored to be in the Han Solo movie. Waller-Bridge is rumored to be playing a female droid, while Newton’s role is totally unknown, though some have speculated she could play Sana Starros from the Marvel comics.
The synopsis mentions that the film will depict Chewbacca and Han’s “early encounters” with Lando Calrissian, which almost certainly means the card game for the Millennium Falcon has to be in this movie. This makes sense based on Lando’s timeline,, but also the way that Donald Glover is grabbing those controls.
Joonas Suotamo will play Chewbacca in this film, a role he began in The Force Awakens, due to the aging Peter Mayhew not being able to participate in all the shots. The new information also confirms that the Han Solo film is slated for release on May 25, 2018. This contradicts earlier rumors that the film would hit theaters in December, following the new pattern of Star Wars films coming out near Christmas. If the Han Solo film keeps its release date, it will be the first Star Wars film to have a summer release since Revenge of the Sith in 2005.
Lord and Miller have described working on the film as making them both feel “really lucky.” Here’s everything we know about the Han Solo movie.
