Supergirl hasn’t had the best track record when it comes to relationships, but now a reality-altering imp from the Fifth Dimension wants to marry her. The new trailer for next week’s Valentine’s Day episode of Supergirl features the troublemaking Mr. Mxyzptlk as he tries to woo Kara for what’s promised to be the “weirdest Valentine ever.”
After interrupting Kara and Mon-El’s romantic moment at the end of Supergirl’s last episode, next week’s episode, “Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk,” will fully introduce the fan-favorite Superman villain on his suspicious quest to marry Kara Zor-El. It seems Mxyzptlk is in love with her and is more than willing to use his reality-warping abilities to achieve his goal.
The extended promo shows Mxyzptlk popping Kara into a wedding dress in the middle of her apartment, Maggie wanting to “puke” over Valentine’s Day (with Alex looking a little worried), and Mon-El standing in the middle of the D.E.O. headquarters in his underwear. Supergirl also makes an appearance in what looks to be Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, probably searching for information on the troublesome Mxyzptlk.
Flashes of other delightfully confusing scenes make an appearance in the trailer: Mon-El and Mxyzptlk throwing down on a stage in Victorian-era clothing, Winn and Kara kissing (though one of them is almost definitely Mxyzptlk in disguise as he tries to cause chaos in Kara’s life), and Mxyzptlk dressed as Superman, to name a few.
Mxyzptlk (sometimes just “Mxy”) looks different in DC’s comics. He’s very much the imp he’s described as — short, white-haired, cackling like a lunatic most of the time, and always bugging Superman. Mxyzptlk is rarely an all-out villain, as he’s much more a nuisance than anything, due to his not being bound by third dimensional laws and his ability to manipulate reality in a way that looks like magic. But he’s not magical, he’s just a dick.
The only way to return Mxyzptlk to his home dimension is by tricking him to say his name backward: “Kltpzyxm.” And that’s just as difficult as it sounds.
Check out how Kara and the gang will manage to get Mxyzptlk to say “Kltpzyxm” when Season 2, Episode 13 of Supergirl premieres on February 20 on The CW.
