The Han Solo Spinoff Will Feature a New CGI Droid or Alien

Han Solo will encounter at least one new exotic alien or talkative droid in his and Lando’s upcoming standalone movie. The next Star Wars spinoff is getting a fully CG alien or robot character that will most likely be played by Fleabag actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Variety first reported Waller-Bridge’s potential casting, explaining that the unnamed and unspecified character is going to be an important part of the movie’s ensemble. The Han Solo movie already has its primary companion character, with another appearance by Solo’s trusty sidekick Chewbacca. It’s pure speculation, but it’s probably safe to say Waller-Bridge will play this movie’s new droid.

The dynamic in Star Wars usually leaves room for one friendly alien creature and one neurotic British-accented droid. Since Waller-Bridge is British and plays a neurotic character on her Amazon show Fleabag, a performance capture droid à la K-2SO in Rogue One is the logical conclusion. Waller-Bridge’s potential droid character would be great because there hasn’t been a female droid who is a main character in a Star Wars movie yet.

If Phoebe-Waller ends up playing a performance capture alien, shell join Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) as a creature in the Disney-fied Star Wars canon.

The Han Solo movie stars Alden Ehrenreich as the galactic smuggler, first made famous by Harrison Ford in the previous Star Wars movies. Ehrenreich is joined by Donald Glover as Han’s best frenemy Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson as Han’s as-yet-unnamed mentor character, and Emilia Clarke as Han’s potential love interest.

The Han Solo movie is set to hit theaters sometime in 2018.
