Video Interview: Toby Schmitz Talks 'Black Sails' Season 4
Video: Toby Schmitz chats about Season 4, Jack's foray into sword fighting, what lies ahead, and more.
If you ask any Black Sails fan what their favorite quote is, chances are it’s a Jack Rackham line. (Maybe a classic “If you behave like children, I will be your daddy.” or the “Please understand, I’m quite particular about my library.”). He’s quick-witted, quippy, and instantly makes every scene more fun. That’s not even mentioning his sideburns and hair — which are the stuff of legend — or his intriguing odd-couple relationships with his partner Anne Bonny (Clara Paget) and the dearly departed Charles Vane (Zach McGowan).
It’s the latter that’s driving him forward in Season 4. The season premiere showed Jack fighting more than we’ve ever seen before. He’s had the odd skirmish before and a memorable fight in Season 2, but he’s never been feral or natural at it like Vane or Anne. The beginning of Season 4 has also seen Jack forgoing his usual quips in favor of a Flint-style speech, riling up his crew.
Luckily, Toby Schmitz, who plays Jack, spits just as much verbal fire as his character. Schmitz stopped by the Inverse office for a Facebook Live chat about Season 4, Rackham’s fashion, his memories from the set, his favorite Jack scene, and more. If you missed it live, catch it here.
Black Sails Season 4 is currently airing on Starz.
