Watch Team 'Arrow' Argue Over New Black Canary Recruits

The CW

The vigilantes of Star City are looking for a new Black Canary, but no one can agree on a single candidate. In a new trailer for next week’s episode of Arrow titled “Second Chances,” Team Arrow toss around ex-soldiers, CIA operatives, black belts, even actual ninjas to take up Laurel Lance’s superhero mantle. Although they’ll eventually settle on one — her name is Tina Boland — it’s going to be a process first.

After the death of Laurel Lance in Arrow’s fourth season, no one has taken up the Black Canary mantle. It’s been abandoned, but it looks like the second half of Season 5 will witness someone step up. “Second Chances” will go through the motions of entertaining prospects but will quickly involve Tina Boland (Juliana Harkavy), a former Central City detective who actually has her own Canary Cry.

The absence of a Black Canary, an important character in the Green Arrow mythos, has left a sore, gaping hole in the show’s ensemble dynamic. Because the ideals of Black Canary can’t die with Laurel, it’s good that Green Arrow and company will make sure someone worthy can carry her legacy. It’s also exciting to have more women, because ever since Artemis (Madison McLaughlin) defected to Prometheus’s side before the mid-season break, Team Arrow has become a brooding dude fest.

Check out the trailer below, in which Tina Boland single-handedly busts Team Arrow’s balls.

Arrow airs Wednesdays on the CW.
