The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the biggest and most popular franchises around, but there’s been a surprising lack of good Avengers video games. Sure, there’s been Marvel Ultimate Alliance and the Lego series, but nothing that felt fittingly epic. Seems like that’s about to change, because Marvel and Square Enix — the storied video game company behind the Final Fantasy series — announced a multi-game partnership and teased a new Avengers game.
Both Marvel and Square Enix teased the Thursday reveal ahead of time, leading to speculation that the announcement might have something to do with the upcoming Kingdom Hearts III, since it’s a crossover between Disney and Final Fantasy. This, however, was unexpected.
The announcement, which was posted to Square Enix’s Twitter, was brief, but it was accompanied by the hashtag “#Reassemble” and a trailer. In the trailer, we see shots of what look like damaged and scattered bits of gear from defeated Marvel heroes. We see Bruce Banner’s glasses, Thor’s hammer, a gauntlet from the Iron Man suit, and Captain America’s iconic shield.
“The world always needed heroes,” an unidentified woman says in a voiceover. “We just need to reassemble.”
Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, two developers responsible for the new Tomb Raider and Deus Ex games respectively, are also working on the title. (Square Enix serves as publisher.)
Few other details — including the number of games in the series or any sort of release date — have been revealed yet. Stay tuned.
