One of the biggest deals in the second season of Syfy’s The Magicians will definitely be Julia enacting her revenge on Reynard the Fox. But how will that revenge play out? The author of the books upon which the show is based, Lev Grossman, says that revenge is going to be pretty badass this season.
Some mild spoilers for the book versions of The Magicians ahead.
In the second book, The Magician King, Julia is assaulted by Reynard the Fox after he tricks her and her Free Trader Beowulf pals into thinking he is a different kind of friendly deity. This plays out similarly in the show, only perhaps even more brutally. This event changes Julia forever, and in the Syfy version of the story, it has created a big revenge storyline. The debut episode of the second season found Julia making her deal with the Beast to figure out how to destroy Reynard.
In speaking about the changes from his books to the show, author Lev Grossman shared with Inverse his thoughts on Reynard.
“God he is awful,” Grossman said and explained that Reynard’s dark deeds on the show will have “way more aftermath” than in the books. “Reynard is a lot more of a continuing presence in the show,” he said. “And there is more of a reckoning.”
In the final book in the trilogy, The Magician’s Land, Reynard is killed not by Julia, and seemingly, “offscreen.” But now, this storyline is set to have a different, and perhaps for Julia, a more satisfying, conclusion.
The Magicians airs on Wednesdays on Syfy.
