Sabine's Darksaber on 'Rebels' is a 'Star Wars' Game Changer

by Ryan Britt

Roughly 1,000 years before the fall of the Republic, the ancient Mandalorian warrior Tar Vizsla created a “one of a kind” lightsaber called the Darksaber. And now, the re-emergence of the Darksaber will completely alter the balance of power in the galaxy in Star Wars Rebels. Obi-Wan Kenobi’s return might be the most glamorous event coming on this season of Rebels, but Sabine’s Darksaber is a bigger game changer.

In a recently released clip from the upcoming episode of Rebels titled “Trials of the Darksaber,” Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus learns of that the Darksaber is a special lightsaber which was created by Tar Vizsla, the first Mandalorian to be inducted into the Jedi Order, roughly a millennium before the events of all the Star Wars films. Passed down through various generations, the saber belongs to the Mandalorian House Vizsla, of which resident Rebel Sabine Wren is a member. And that’s where the game-changing element comes in: If Sabine wields the Darksaber expertly, Rebels may reveals she has Jedi potential.

In another clip released from “Trials of the Darksaber,” Sabine is training with Kanan who seems to be pushing Sabine, oddly, to give in to her anger. Maybe Kanan is testing Sabine, but the scene stops short of showing us that Sabine is actually Force-sensative. She uses a kind of light-whip to retrieve her Darksaber when it’s knocked out of her hands, and she doesn’t have the same connection to her saber as Kanan has to his. Still, all of this focus on Sabine and this saber is starting to get a little suspicious.

The Darksaber first appeared in The Clone Wars, in which Obi-Wan Kenobi’s secret lover, the Duchess Satine of Mandalore, figured prominently. The Mandalorian connection alone has been enough to fuel certain fan theories that Obi-Wan and Satine has a secret child (that maybe Obi-Wan didn’t know about) and that child is in fact … Sabine Wren from Rebels. The theory goes that Sabine could then be the mother of Rey from The Force Awakens, which would in fact make Rey a Kenobi by blood.

But things have gotten even more interesting with recent comments from the voice actress who plays Sabine, Tiya Sircar. Speaking to New York Daily News, the actress said that a romance between Ezra Bridger and Sabine was probably not going to happen.

“Because there’s a young female character and a young male character, they must eventually have a romantic relationship?” she said, but clarified, “It doesn’t always have to go that way.”

And yet, what if it did go that way? If Ezra and Sabine eventually had a child, then it stands to reason the Force would be very strong with that child, perhaps more powerful than anyone we’ve seen since Luke. Which would explain why Rey is as powerful as she is in The Force Awakens.

Still, even if these possible family connections end up not happening, the existence of the Darksaber and the possible reveal of Sabine being a Force-user is still a good enough reason to think this next episode of Rebels will be big.

The Star Wars Rebels episode “Trials of the Darksaber” airs this Saturday on Disney XD.
