Guillermo del Toro Polls Twitter to Gauge 'Hellboy 3' Interest

by Emily Gaudette

On Wednesday, director Guillermo del Toro posted a tweet “informally polling” his followers to gauge interest in Hellboy 3. The Twitter poll only included “yes” and “hell, yes” as options, which means del Toro isn’t actually outsourcing his PR to the internet. He is, however, remaining vocal on the subject of Hellboy 3, which he described at length in a Reddit AMA two years ago.

We’re coming up on a decade since del Toro’s last Hellboy movie, which actually did very well critically and commercially, earning $160 million at the box office with a budget of $85 million.

After responses starting rolling in, del Toro added:

During his AMA, Del Toro posted the following as a probable Hellboy 3 plot synopsis:

The idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.

As of now, del Toro hasn’t hinted at anything concrete, and often tells the press that budgeting the immense amount of money it would take a studio to reproduce Hellboy’s underworld has kept a third film from moving into pre-production. However, he’s likely to get those 10,000 votes pretty soon, so he may just be sitting down with Hellboy’s comic creatives to get this thing going.

There is no release date planned for Hellboy 3.
