Obi-Wan Kenobi will face off against Darth Maul in the final episodes of the third season of Star Wars Rebels. And along with that grudge match, these episodes are retconning a ton of other Star Wars canon previously considered “Legends.”
Released on January 4, the final scenes of the new mid season trailer for the Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels shows Darth Maul sneaking up behind Obi-Wan Kenobi in the desert of Tatooine. As long suspected, this means Obi-Wan and Darth Maul will duel on Tatooine, just as they did in the previously non-canon story “Old Wounds.” This is the first time Obi-Wan has appeared in canon since the final season of The Clone Wars, and a voice cameo in The Force Awakens. Though it’s unclear if this time he will be voiced by previous Obi-Wan voice actor James Arnold Taylor or someone else doing what sounds like a spot-on Alec Guinness impression. Obi-Wan’s battle stance also mirrors the way Ewan McGregor fought General Grievous in Revenge of the Sith. Two fingers pointing!
But Obi-Wan versus Darth Maul isn’t the only old school canon finding its way into these episodes of Rebels. Grand Admiral Thrawn looks like he’s employing troopers that look very much like the Dark Troopers from the old Dark Forces video game, while a multiple-winged TIE Fighter appears that matches the look of the TIE Defenders from the ‘90s X-Wing computer games.
In terms of its own canon, the new Rebels trailer shows Sabine wielding the darksaber in order to rally Mandalore behind the Rebels, Mon Mothma hanging out with the Ghost crew, and of course, Saw Gerrera from Rogue One.
In Season 2, Rebels created a shocking finale in which Ahsoka fought Darth Vader. Somehow, it looks like this season is going to top it. Watch the full trailer below.
