'Power Rangers' Reveals Bryan Cranston's Zordon in VR Movie

The upcoming Power Rangers movie reboot from Lionsgate just gave us our first look at Zordon, Bryan Cranston’s wise ancient wizard who mentors the five heroic teenagers, through an interactive VR film at CES 2017 in Las Vegas.

CES begins on January 5, but today images surfaced on Reddit showing parts of the VR film revealing Zordon and Alpha 5 (Bill Hader). Based on the images, Zordon has been altered from a blue head in a tube to a giant blue head over a rock formation, although the images aren’t clear enough to be definitive.

Oscar-nominee Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Trumbo) signed on last summer to play Zordon in the live action film through motion-capture and voice-over, marking a return to the franchise. In the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from 1993, Cranston played two monsters — Snizzard and Mirror Master — who fought on behalf of the evil Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks in the movie). Cranston had steady work early in his career doing voices for anime and children’s TV, including Power Rangers, prior to becoming crystal meth kingpin Walter White in Breaking Bad, which earned him a number of Emmy awards.

The Power Rangers reboot, directed by Dean Israelite, has thus far been unafraid to change concepts from the camp classic TV show. Banks’s Rita Repulsa is sexier than she was in 1994, in green form-fitting armor, while Zordon’s lovable robot assistant Alpha 5 has turned into a gooey alien with a pot-belly. The Power Rangers themselves are still dinosaur-inspired heroes, but their costumes have become layered armor rather than bright spandex and motorcycle helmets.

Power Rangers will be released on March 24.
