You Won't Understand 'Young Justice' Season 3 Without Comics

The announcement declaring the return of Young Justice was one of the better things to happen in 2016, but fans should be prepared to do their homework. In a new blog post, co-creator Greg Weisman urged fans to buy Young Justice comics, not only to prove to DC that fans really want more of the franchise, but because the new season will incorporate things only comic fans will understand.

Published Monday on his personal blog, Weisman says he and his team are working on the new season which takes “ten months minimum” to finish. In lieu of episodes, Weisman says if fans want more Young Justice sooner, a new comic series can happen in the interim, but only when DC knows fans want it in the first place. Weisman urges fans to buy Young Justice comic books exclusively on digital platforms.

And that might be a good idea, because Season 3 will be loaded with stuff that happened in those comics in addition to the show’s acclaimed previous two seasons.

“[S]tuff in Season Three will play off of stuff from Seasons One and Two AND from the comics,” Weisman writes.

When Young Justice was on Cartoon Network, an ongoing comic was released that explored stories the TV show didn’t. Weisman told Inverse these comics are canon, and if fans are obsessed enough they can map out the entire Young Justice timeline thanks to canonical timestamps in both mediums.

Weisman says he and artist Christopher Jones are “chomping at the bit” to make more Young Justice comics because they take “considerably less time” than TV. “[I]f we got a green light on a comic book series now, you could theoretically have new stories in a matter of months.”

While Weisman said he prefers physical copies, he is urging fans to buy digital. Hard copies in stores and eBay are in the secondary market, meaning DC doesn’t see any of those sales. “The best way to show DC that you want more comics is to purchase these stories electronically on the DC APP, on COMIXOLOGY, or on iTUNES,” Weisman writes, “Put money in DC’s pocket and they’ll want more of that green. Buy a lot of YJ comics and it just follows that they’ll order up more YJ comics.”

Young Justice will return sometime in the future.
