Batman Makes the Joker Cry in Extended 'Lego Batman' Trailer

Comic fans have known for a long time that there exists a kind of Freudian subtext between Batman and the Joker. However The Lego Batman Movie simply chose to make it text in a new extended trailer for the film, in which the Joker assembles a supervillain team in response to Batman’s callous treatment of their hero-villain relationship.

Lego Batman is the first spin-off of 2014’s massively successful animated film, The Lego Movie. Will Arnett reprises his role as the super-serious, super-dark, heavy-metal composing Batman in a story that takes place in the Lego version of Gotham city, complete with all your favorite DC Batman characters.

The film’s plot follows Lego Batman, lonely from years of solitude, as he adopts a young orphan to crimefight with. Unfortunately for them, the Joker takes Batman’s rejection of their relationship a little too personally and recruits villains like Catwoman, Riddler, and Condiment Man to take down Gotham.

The Lego Cinematic Universe is shaping up to be one of Warner Bros. most irreverent film franchises, driving The Lego Movie to massive critical and financial success through an emphasis on pop-culture savvy humor and a surprising amount of heart.

While the trailer for Lego Batman definitely plays up the same kind of poppy humor as The Lego Movie, relying on the same dry delivery that made Arnett’s Batman a fan-favorite in the Lego Movie, it wouldn’t be too surprising if Lego Batman delivered a film that will ultimately be full of sentimental emotions. Perhaps even becoming one of the best Batman film in the modern era.

The Lego Batman Movie hits theaters February 10, 2017.
