The 'Guardians' 2 Trailer Song Is Already Number One on iTunes
James Gunn has done it again. Two years after kicking off the first Guardians of the Galaxy with Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,” the trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and its usage of Sweet’s “Fox on the Run” has propelled yet another song from the ‘70s to the number one song in the 21st century.
One of the biggest things to come out of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was the surprising success of the film’s in-universe mixtape made for Star-Lord. Dubbed “Awesome Mix. Vol. 1,” the tape was made for Peter Quill by his dying mother, who packed the tape with several oldies but goodies from the likes of David Bowie, Elvin Bishop, the Runaways, and the Jackson 5. Awesome Mix Vol. 1 shot up the charts upon release and became a number one hit in 2014, despite being just comprised of songs from the ‘70s.
Now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming out, and with it the release of Awesome Mix Vol. 2, which was teased at the end of the first film. The first track will probably be “Fox on the Run” which has been used heavily in the early trailers for the sequel, and the song has already reached No. 1 on the iTunes rock chart.
In addition, “Fox on the Run” was added to the official Awesome Mix Vol. 1 playlist on Spotify from Hollywood Records. The playlist will hopefully become even bigger as more songs from the second Awesome Mix are revealed, and will definitely brand off into a second playlist once the full mixtape and film release.
Until then, it’s comforting to know that James Gunn is a hit maker for songs from the ‘70s, and he can rest comfortably knowing that he can probably DJ the hell out of a retro radio station if he wanted to.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters in May 2017.
