Cleganebowl — the fan theory that a fight to the death will go down between the Clegane brothers — has long been the stuff of legend on Game of Thrones, but the show might be bound for a fight that’s even better. UFC double-champion Conor McGregor is in talks to appear on Season 7 or Season 8.
Northern Irish publication Belfast Live reports that a source told them, “It’s been agreed that McGregor will appear in one of the remaining two seasons of Game of Thrones. He was headhunted as it were by HBO, as one of the GoT directors is a huge UFC fan. They believed that he would be a perfect fit for the show.”
It’s true — a man famous for saying “I’d like to take the opportunity to apologize … to absolutely nobody! The double-champ does what the fuck he wants!” is quite perfect for the dog-eat-dog world of Westeros.
He’s either destined to be best friends with the likes of Sandor Clegane — recall his Season 6 murder spree in which he mocked a man’s last words (“Those are your last words? ‘Fuck you?’ Come on, you can do better. You’re shit at dying, you know that?”) — or they’d instantly be trading gloriously savage insults.
As McGregor is not an actor, it’s unlikely he’ll play a character from the books. Instead, his presence would be more plot-oriented. After all, why have him on your show if you don’t plan to showcase his fighting skills?
Even if Cleganebowl doesn’t happen then, we could very well see a face-off between a legendary Westerosi fighter and one from our own world.
