One of the biggest mysteries for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, other than that whole Ego the Living Planet reveal, is how the hell Yondu ends up as a member of the Guardians. It turns out it’s because the Ravagers have kicked him out.
Marvel gave an expanded look at the Yondu rescue scene at Comic-Con Experience 2016 in Brazil over the weekend. According to people present at the panel, the scene takes place after the Ravagers have captured Rocket, Yondu, and Baby Groot (after turning on their former leader), with plans to turn them over to the Kree. During the scene, Baby Groot adorably rescues Yondu’s fin, thanks to his small size, and they all escape together. And yes, this includes the awesome reversal of the famous “Rocket and Groot gun stance.”
It looks like Yondu’s going to be a Ravager without anything to ravage after his team mutinies against him. Director James Gunn said the Ravagers have a “contentious, even mutinous, relationship with Yondu” after the events of the first film, when Yondu let Star-Lord go despite being given a decoy for the Infinity Stone. Sean Gunn, who plays Kraglin in both Guardians films, confirmed that the Ravagers aren’t happy with Yondu and will likely boot him out of the club.
“Theres a little rumbling amongst the Ravagers, like, ‘Where does Yondu’s allegiance lay here? Is he going soft on Quill?’ So, the Ravagers have to make a decision of what they’re gonna do about Yondu and I think Kraglin is a key part of that,” Gunn said.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like things will end well for the Ravagers after turning on Yondu. Dozens of them are killed off during the escape scene, including Half-Nut, who’s being played by Mindless Self Indulgence frontman Jimmy Urine. Still it’s worth it to get Yondu’s fin back. That thing is awesome.
