When Steve Ditko first drew Spider-Man in the comics, he gave him iconic, but useless, “wings” underneath his armpits. It was a visual choice that served zero purpose, but it looked cool, and even though Spidey dropped the wings over time, they’re still a signature look. It appears Ditko-inspired wings will make their cinematic debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
At CCXP in Brazil on Friday, Sony gave the fans in attendance their first look at Spider-Man: Homecoming, from director Jon Watts. Although the footage is not yet online, Marvel VP and Executive Editor Ryan Penagos tweeted brief descriptions of the footage, confirming the return of Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), who gives Peter Parker (Tom Holland) an upgraded suit complete with The Wings. Apparently, it was “just so rad.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be the first Spider-Man movie within the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Taking place after Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland reprises his role as Spider-Man in what is shaping up to be a teen-centric superhero adventure. In Homecoming, Spidey will square off against Vulture (Michael Keaton) and Tinkerer (Michael Chernus) while aided by his pals from his high school.
A trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming is expected to be released alongside Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an example of the synergy between Marvel Studios and parent company Disney.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released July 7, 2017.
