New Teaser for 'The Mummy' Reboots an Ancient Monster

Can Tom Cruise recreate the beautiful disaster that was the 1999 classic?

The new teaser trailer for 2017’s rebooted The Mummy features not only a terrified and humbled Tom Cruise as adventurer Nick Morton, but also venerated newcomer Sofia Boutella as Ahmanet, a very pissed, very ancient, and very immortal princess.

The teaser, which is a preview of the full trailer that will air Sunday, December 4, has plenty of callbacks to the 1999 Brendan Fraser classic: vast expanses of desert, people forced way out of their comfort zones, musty tombs, and a vengeful monster.

This 2017 The Mummy is the first in the Universal Monsters project that will reboot and create movies starring the Invisible Man, the Wolf Man, Van Helsing, Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Bride of Frankenstein.

What’s missing from the teaser is The Mummy’s classic cheesiness. Half of the fun of the original The Mummy is that it’s kind of a beautiful disaster — Fraser plays the perfectly idiotic snarky hero; horrible, ‘90s-CGI flesh-eating beetles crawl under skin; the Mummy is obsessed with a living woman, and he needs an exact number of people to suck the life out of to become human-esque again. Jonathan’s spineless obsession with wealth is pure gold. Plus: Brendan Fraser. Come on. No one is going to beat Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell. His daringness. His love for Evelyn. His perfect late-‘90s haircut.

The full trailer on December 4 will, no doubt, give a better look at what to expect from next year’s reboot of The Mummy. Here’s hoping it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
