For months it has been known that the next Star Trek starship — the USS Discovery — will have a female Lt. Commander character called “Number One.” And now, it looks like that new Starfleet hero will be played by Michelle Yeoh. Or … is she the captain?
Speaking to Coming Soon, one of Star Trek: Discovery’s writers, the legendary Nicholas Meyer, let slip that he knew of Yeoh’s casting in the show. This either means Yeoh will be playing the lead new Starfleet character called “Number One” or it means she’ll be playing the Captain of the Discovery. Of course, she could be playing different roles entirely, but why would you cast someone as good as Michelle Yeoh and not have her be one of the two biggest roles?
Michelle Yeoh is probably most famous for her role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a role she recently returned to in the film’s sequel Sword of Destiny.
At this point, nothing is officially known about Yeoh’s role on Discovery, and the actor herself hasn’t confirmed the casting yet. But, there’s a lot of circumstantial evidence to support the idea that the ship is one a secret mission connected with the clandestine organization called “Section 31.” If true, Yeoh has secret agent experience, too. Michelle Yeoh played Col. Wai Lin in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies
Star Trek: Discovery debuts in the Spring of 2017 on CBS All Access.
