Maybe our most recent X-Men movie really was the apocalypse for our favorite mutants. It appears Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse was one of 20th Century Fox’s last shots at its current property. Fox is looking to reset its X-Men franchise, and that revamped collection of movies will likely include Deadpool 3, featuring a separate team of mutants known as the X-Force.

The studio is still finalizing negotiations with John Wick director David Leitch to helm Deadpool 2, but Fox is already pursuing a third movie that will include the X-Force. Another Rob Liefeld creation from 1991, the X-Force are a more militant and aggressive squad of enhanced individuals compared to Professor Xavier’s do-gooder misfits.

X-Force comics have been undertaken by some of the industry’s best writers, although the books themselves have been hit or miss. Besides Liefeld, other X-Force writers have been Fabian Nicieza, Jeph Loeb, Warren Ellis, Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, and Rick Remender and Jerome Opeña — who wrote 2010’s Uncanny X-Force which had Deadpool as an X-Force member.

Other prominent X-Force members include Wolverine, Cyclops, Wolfsbane, Warpath, X-23, Storm, Deathlok, Bishop, and Cable, who is confirmed for Deadpool 2. When Deadpool was part of the team, he was accompanied by Wolverine, Psylocke, Archangel, Fantomex, and E.V.A. He also had a special white costume while he was part of the team.

While Fox pursues Deadpool 3, the studio is also looking to retool its entire X-Men series with producer Simon Kinberg fulfilling Bryan Singer’s role. Kinberg is working on a new X-Men script that will have franchise stars Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender in mind, though it’s unknown if they will return.

Deadpool 2 will begin filming in January 2017.
