New 'Rogue One' TV Spot Reminds Us Who This Is All About

Returning nefarious villains and continuity-spanning secret planets are no match for a good Rebel hero, and the latest Rogue One footage reminds us Jyn Erso is the only reason to care about the next Star Wars movie.

There’s not much in the way of new footage in the just-released TV spot for Rogue One — titled “Together” — but it does make one point loud and clear: This is Jyn’s movie. Darth Vader may lurk in the shadows, the kyber crystals on the planet Jedha might tell us more about the entire Star Wars saga than ever before, and everyone from Han Solo, to Luke, to Tarkin might make cameos. But none of that matters, because for now, Felicity Jones’s inspiring Jyn is leading the charge.

The exuberant upbeat tone seen in the last trailer is here, too. Jyn’s voice is the only voice we hear, while her feelings about “hope” are hammered home, reminding us that this movie is basically best friends with the original 1977 Star Wars: A New Hope. In addition to the new TV spot, heroic promotional banners depicting Jyn and her squad charing at some stormtroopers have popped up, too.

Despite mixed feelings about the tone of the Rogue One, or what the reshoots might or might not mean for the plot, this latest spot makes us think there’s no way Jyn Erso will die in Rogue One. At this point, the character seems to be the absolute heart and soul of the movie, making the possibility of her surviving into future Star Wars movies a pretty good bet.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story open on December 16. Watch the new TV spot below.
