Marvel's 'Monsters Unleashed' Pits Superheroes Against Kaiju

On Tuesday, Marvel released plot details about their upcoming, epic crossover event, Monsters Unleashed. The comic will put everyone’s favorite Marvel superheroes in a battle royale against the universe’s largest monsters.

Comics writer Cullen Bunn, fresh off his series Deadpool: Back in Black, is spearheading Monsters Unleashed and plans on delivering an epic blockbuster of a series, which Bunn finds inadequate. He believes nobody would make a movie as big and as with as many monsters as Monsters Unleashed.

The plot begins when monsters — some created by Ditko, Kirby, and Don Heck, others original creations for the series — crash on Earth. Marvel heroes have to put aside their ongoing differences to stop these rampaging kaijus from destroying everything in sight. Bunn promises that because of the sheer number and strength of these monsters, brute strength will not solve Marvel’s monster crisis.

Bunn also revealed that this will be the biggest group of heroes he will be working with. The current cast includes members from the Avengers, Champions, X-Men, Inhumans, and Guardians of the Galaxy. While there will be a handful of POV characters to drive the narrative, Bunn can’t overstate how huge the cast Monsters Unleashed will feature.

Among some of the heroes not affiliated with teams joining the battle against Kaijus are Moon Girl, who Bunn says has a “huge role”, and Elsa Bloodstone, Marvel’s resident supernatural huntress who hasn’t had a lead role since Marvel’s cult hit Nextwave.

While there will be some tie-ins, Monsters Unleashed is planned to be five massive 30-page issues that will unite the heroes post-Civil War II. While details are still scarce at this point, Bunn is promising an exciting adventure that will emphasize fun and chaos.

Monsters Unleashed begins January 18, 2017.
